Society, council to merge
PA Wellington After months of negotiations, the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society has finally voted in favour of a merger with the Native Forests Action Council. After a four-hour debate on Saturday 39 society councillors voted in favour of the merger and 15 against, with one abstention. The society’s president, Mr Tony Ellis, said that although the Wellington-led opposition had voted against the move, « he felt it had been accepted as a final decision. The new joint organisation will continue to be known as the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society, with Mr Ellis as president. The Action Council should add. about 6000 to the society’s membership of about 34,000.
