P.M. rejects demands

PA Blenheim Demands by the Municipal Association for clarification of political party policy on local body financing have been rejected by the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon). Mr Muldoon said that it was inappropriate to try to put pressure on the Government over the issue. He said that if members of local bodies admitted when seeking office that they could not adequately run the local authority they would never have been elected. Mr Muldoon said he objected to the introduction of a style of tactics of trying to put pressure on the Government in order to take pressure off the municipal authorities. Because of such tactics, relationships between the Government and the Municipal Association were at a lower ebb now than at any time in the 20 years he had been in the Government, said Mr Muldoon.
