Smithfield market

New Zealand lamb sales on the U.K. wholesale market last week continued to be sluggish, and there was some • easing in values, reports the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board in its weekly market survey. Conversely, the domestic lamb market recovered sharply from its declining trend. This was mainly as a result of the strong export trade. Gains of nearly 9p per lb were made at • live auctions. United Kingdom wholesale beef values also firmed. On Smithfield market PL grade New Zealand lamb was quoted at 66p per lb. There were no quotations for PM grade lamb. Small English lambs were quoted at 64-

75p per lb and mediums at 65.5-75 p per lb. The market for beef in the United States was very slow and weak. A few offers were received from New Zealand for manufacturing beef at levels the market could not accept. The average price for New Zealand cow beef for the week was 101 US cents per lb c.i.f., which was down two cents on the previous week. The Japanese mutton market was fairly active last week for Australian carcase mutton, but with little business from New Zealand. Importers report purchases of more than 2000 tonnes of Australian carcase mutton for shipment from December onward.
