Meat for Iran held

PA Wellington The Meat Board yesterday blocked the shipment of $5O million worth of lamb to Iran because it has not yet been paid for. The board’s chairman, Mr Adam Begg, said 24 shipments carrying 85,971 tonnes had been discharged and paid for by Iran, but the rest of this year’s contract, about 21,000 tonnes worth $5O million was being held. “No letter of credit has been issued by the Iranian authorities to cover this quantity and the delay in issuing it has far exceeded normal commercial practice,” Mr Begg said. “Consequently, it has been reluctantly decided to delay further the entry of the remaining shipments to Iran until the technical difficulties delaying payment have been overcome.” Mr Begg said the board regarded Iran as a good, long-term trading prospect. “We will extend every possible consideration to Iran in the future, as we have in the past,” he said.
