Union opposes markets
Shop employees “paid the price” of cheaper groceries from “warehouse-type” supermarkets such as the Countdown Wholesale Warehouse which opened in Sydenham yesterday, said the advocate for the Shop Employees’ Association, Mr R. J. Campbell, yesterday. Mr Campbell said that such warehouses were marked by much lower staffing levels and lower levels of customer service than other supermarkets. “These markets will make big inroads into retail employment opportunities unless their growth is controlled. Such enterprises are spreading to all parts of the retail industry. People who use them may well appreciate lower prices but its shop employees pay the price as jobs are lost,” said Mr Campbell.
The Sydenham warehouse is the second Countdown business to open in Christchurch, the first being at Northlands in May. Customers have to buy a minimum of $lO worth of groceries and pack the goods themselves after selecting them from shelves in the warehouse. Groceries, are brought into the. warehouse on forklifts direct from manufacturers. A High Court injunction against the Sydenham enterprise is being brought by the Christchurch City Council. It will be heard on December 7.
