Increase in building permits
PA Wellington Permits to build 1457 new houses and flats valued at $63.6 million were’issued in August, up 17.9 per cent on August last year and 50 per cent in value says the Government Statistician, Dr J. H. Darwin. The figure brings the number of houses authorised for the 12 months ended August, 1981, to 15,531 compared with 15,034 for the comparable period ended 1980 and 17,223 for 1979. The value of new housing permits was, $619.1 million for, the 12 months ended r August;-19'81', compared with $484.4 million and $478.7 million for the similar periods ending in 1980 and 1979 respectively. For the year ended August, 1981, permits for' alterations and additions to houses increased by 14.2 per cent in number and 33.88 per cent in
value, compared with the 1980 year. The number of permits for alterations and additions to houses for the year ended August, 1981, was 60,216, compared with 52,750 for 1980 and 52,402 for 1979, while the respective value for these years was $224.3 million, $167.6 million and $147.1 million. For the month to August, 1981, the increase in permits for alterations and additions to houses was 15.7 per cent in number and 36.4 per cent in value. Permits for houses and other buildings (including alterations and additions, but excluding non-building construction) issued for August, 1981, covered construction to the value of $142 million, compared with $108.4 million in August, 1980.
