Bowler selected for world event

The Hawke’s Bay lawn bowler, Peter Bryant, has been chosen to represent New Zealand at the Embassy world singles tournament at Coatbridge, Scotland, in February. His selection was announced in Christchurch yesterday by the president of the New Zealand Bowling Association, Mr Dave Martin. This will be the fourth year that a New Zealander has contested the tournament, which is played indoors. None of the previous

three — George Alley (Auckland), John Mears (Marlborough) and, last time, John Murtagh (Taranaki) — was especially successful, although Murtagh did win a preliminary pairs tournament. Bryant has come a long way in a short time. He was little known 12 months ago, but last summer won the national champion-of-cham-pions singles title and was a member of the successful New Zealand team for the recent mini Games in Brisbane.
