Von Cettes fancied at Avondale

Special correspondent Auckland Von Cettes and Decibel look two very, sound prospects in Avondale’s feature race today. Victory for either would break a stranglehold Central Districts horses have had on big northern cups and handicaps. The event is the IZB Allrounder, a 2200 m race worth $60,000 and won last year by Four Crowns, from Foxton, from the South Island horse, Brutus. Representation from the lower half of the North Island is again formidable, particularly in the form of Cuss and Gun For Fun which ran so well at Rotorua last week-end.. In the past year and a bit the likes of Kindled, Four Crowns, Drum, Shamrock, Speculation, Mun Lee and Langeland have taken most of the Auckland and Waikato’s biggest purses back to the Central Districts. In Von Cettes, a five-year-old from Ngaruawahia, just north of Te Rapa, local stables have a very capable middle-distance runner of which the best has yet to be seen. Decibel, from Takanini, has shown often enough proof of her considerable ability, as when fourth in the last Avondale Cup and

second in the Auckland Cup. With better luck she would have much larger stake earnings. . Von Cettes ended last season with intermediategrade wins at Ellerslie, over 2400 m, and Avondale, over 2200 m. His owner-trainer, Mr Ivan Johnson, said after ' that Avondale race, in April, that Von Cettes would be rested through the winter then prepared for big spring handicaps including this one today. Von Cettes resumed racing with a sprint in early October and after one middledistance race was capable of coming from last to. a fourlength win in a 2200 m at Pukekohe on October 17; For all the style of that win the race looked easy for Von Cettes, and it is only reasonable to expect him to have improved further. Decibel has finished just in, behind the placegetters in all her four races this season, running on solidly in the latest two, over middle distances. Her trainer, Brian Deacon, has timed her preparation nicely. One of the best in the business, he is due to win-a big race. Cuss and Gun For Fun seem bound to run prominently again, with Gun For Fun meeting the other horse

on 2.5 kg better terms this time. Cuss might well be allowed to make his own rules in front — many a middledistance event at Avondale has been won from end to end. Silver Rhythm remains a doubtful starter in the Cold Gold Sprint which completes the T.A.B. double with the Allrounder. The trainer, > Trevor McKee,. said yesterday he would not make a decision until this morning. A soft track, would definitely rule out a start. Jf he runs, Silver Rhythm should win his fourth -race on end. Otherwise,, fresh runners such as 'Shibu, Curtsey (a stablemate of/ 7 Silver Rhythm) and ths wonderfully consistent Count Ajax will attract most betting.
