Piggott’s title
NZPA-Reuter London Lester Piggott claimed his tenth jockeys’ title on Saturday and ended speculation about his riding future by announcing he will defend the crown next year. Piggott, who will be 46 on Thursday,, said: “I have no intention yet of starting up as a trainer and am looking forward to the challenge of retaining the championship next season.” Although Piggott’s riding weight of 53kg has restricted his choice of mounts, his total of 178 winners was only 13 fewer than he achieved in 1966, his best season. Piggott, riding his first season as jockey to Henry Cecil’s Warren Place stables, said: “After a lapse of nine seasons it was good to regain the title. My task, though, was made easier when Willie Carson had the ill luck to be injured in the Yorkshire Oaks.” Piggott, himself, needed an operation on a torn ear lobe after a starting stalls accident at Epsom in April. Piggott, who became champion jockey for the first time in 1960, held the title for eight successive years between 1964 and 1971.
