Shipping news New Tasman service
The 3166-ton Tasman container ship Waitaki arrived at Lyttelton over the week-end. marking the beginning of a new service to and from the port. Worked by Maritime Carriers New. Zealand, Ltd. the ship is one of three being put on the new Tasman service. With a capacity of 90 containers. the Wait-xi will work the Lyttelton, Sydney Wellington, Melbourne service. The Lyttelton Harbour Board welcomed the vessel into port yesterday and the chairman, Mr J. E. Mannering, said he Was pleased that the new- service would include Lyttelton. A plaque was presented to the ship’s master at a brief ceremony aboard. Others vessels .in the ■ new trade include the Totara, the first Tackler class vessel tpjwork the trade, which can carry 300 containers, and which also has roll-on capabilities and a lift-on upper deck arrangement. The Totara-will make the Auckland) Sydney, Melbourne run. ; ’ The third vessel in Maritime Carriers’ new, service is. the Dunedin. With her 80-container capacity, she will serve Napier, Sydney, and Melbourne, returning to New Zealand via New Plymouth and Wellington. Maritime Carriers is a subsidiary of Waitaki NZ Refrigerating. Ltd. with the slogan: “We’re on our way. — we’re here to stay.” The service will .be in direct competition to the Union Steam Ship Company’s long-established Tasman roll-on. service. .
