Westland park
Sir.—K. F. Robertson (October 30) should make up his mind whether the West Coast is part of New Zealand. If it is, then the forests there are a national heritage, not just a West Coast one. If it is not, then why are the rest of us subsidising West Coasters to plunder this resource? It would pay the country handsomely to close off Haast Pass and Arthur’s Pass (road and rail). All we get in return for our subsidies is constant whingeing. If Coasters stopped bursting brain-cells in the pubs and did some thinking, they would realise that they are their own worst enemies: they are removing 10 times the timber that these forests can grow, and what is more they are wasting the timber that they do harvest. The State should charge them a realistic stumpage rate — and then any inefficient sawmills would go bankrupt. — Yours, etc., P. MACLAREN. November 1, 1981.
