Dangerous dust

In. some cities the combination of different industrial gases released into the air makes np a king of fog we call “smog.” It makes people cough when they breathe it. If certain fumes and fine particles are present in the smog, it can become poisonous. Today, dust is present in the air at all times. Dust is

tiny particles of solid matter that can be carried in the air. Dust may come from soil blowing, ocean spray, volcanic activity, forest fires, the exhaust from cars, and from industry. The latter is what you see pouring out of factory chimneys. But smog is such an important health problem that many cities are carrying on intensive campaigns to re-

duce the amount of industrial dust in the air.

Dust-producing machinery is built with hoods to keep the dust down. Ventilation systems, blower fans, and electrical devices that cause the dust to settle, are also used.

But the problem of dangerous dust in the air — or “smog” — is a long way from being licked.
