Shipping news Wind-driven ships still being studied
One year after taking delivery of the well-publicised prototype sailing tanker Shin Aitoku Maru, Japanese shipowner Aitoku is about to receive a second ship designed to run on both diesel and wind power. The second ship, the Aitoku Maru, is being built, initially, as a diesel-only powered vessel so full working data can be obtained before the are fitted later.
An even more ambitious programme of assessing the viability of using wind power is under way aboard the Greek cargo ship Mini Lace after 16 months of .development. The Wind Ship Development Corporation of Norwell in the United States is outfitting the ship with the world’s 'largest commercial sail, a triangular dacron sheet with an area of 3000 square feet.
