More bowlers turn professional
PA Auckland The ranks of new Zealand’s professional bowlers increased tenfold when the Epsom open tournamentt finished on Saturday. Only Peter Beiliss—who beat Ivan Kostanich 31-27 in the final—Phil Skoglund and John Malcolm declined to take the prizemoney they were entitled to. John Mrtagh from New Plymouth accepted $5O, but plans to ask the Bowling Association if he can claim the money as expenses for the Pacific Permanent tournament. The Paratutu club man
has been in the New Zealand side since April 1980 and wants to retain his amateur status with a view to playing at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane next September. Skoglund, who is one of the national selectors, and is also a regular member of the New Zealand side is also looking at the pollibility of claiming expenses against the $l6O he won after beating Bob McDonald in the final of the plate, 21-8. Before the tournament started, Nick Unkovich was the o nly professional, having won $5OO at the Papatoetoe
open last tuesday. He picked up another $5O. McDonald won $l4O and Kevin Wing from Palmerston North got $lOO.
