Refuse disposal

Sir,—Yesterday’s paper (October 28) carried the news that the Redwood Action Group had won and will have no transfer station in its area. Today Waimairi residents stop the land-fill scheme near the beach. After I have driven some 12km to dump my rubbish I hope the people of Paparua will let me use their transfer station. If Waimairi residents will not have any facilities for disposing of rubbish in their area they had better find a way of not needing a dump — and fast. Living on Sawyers Arms Road it is obvious to me that the Waimairi dump is not used only by City Council residents. Mr Clark (chairman of the Metropolitan Refuse Disposal Committee) is so right; everybody wants the dump, but not close enough to annoy me, thank you. just close enough to use. — Yours, etc., D. McRAE. October 29, 1981.
