Fine weather, good crowds at 104th Ashburton show

Fine weather for the 104th annual Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association's Show on Friday and Saturday meant good crowds each day.

Two firsts for the show this year were a section for quarter horses and the return of poultry classes after an absence of 70 years. Judges were impressed with the quality of stock presented. Mr L. J. Begg, judge of the South Dorset Down section, said he had a pleasing selection of sheep to consider.

The champion ram was an excellent type of the breed, said Mr Begg. He was a little disappointed, however, in the ewes offered, with only one woolly shown. The pairs of rams were very even and the ram hoggets in excellent condition for the last season.

The judge of the Corriedale rams. Mr D. A. Earl, of Ashburton. said he too had faced a good selection of sheep. They were brought forward in fine condition, especially the younger sheep, after a difficult year.

The champion ram was an outstanding exhibit, said Mr Earl. Wool was in good condition considering the last year.

The English Leicesters were a well bred selection, said the judge, Mr R. W. Cameron, of Kurow. Some of the ewes showed that feed conditions had not been good but the ram hoggets were excellent.

Mr W. R. Thayer, of Gore, judged the Hampshire sheep and said he found good numbers, but was a little disappointed in the ram hoggets. The champion and reserve rams were good specimens, but some of the ram hoggets were not quite up to show conditions, but that may have been due to harder winter conditions.

He said the quality in the ewe section was better and was pleased to see breeders paying attention to basically sound sheep with good form. Gate takings amounted to $11,500.
