Rumanian player voluntarily surrenders
NZPA Melbourne The Rumanian soccer player, Gheorghe Viscreanu, voluntarily surrendered yesterday to the immigration authorities in Melbourne. This follows the Australian Federal Government’s decision earlier this week to refuse refugee status to Mr Viscreanu, who left his youth soccer team earlier this month to stay in Australia. He has been in hiding since.
The Immigration Minister, Mr lan MacPhee, issued a statement in Canberra yesterday saying there had been extensive discussions between a Victorian lawyer, Mr David Galbally, who is representing Viscreanu, immigration authorities in Melbourne and himself.
The statement, issued jointly with Mr Galbally, continued: “As a result, Mr Viscreanu has voluntarily surrendered himself to the custody of the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs and will spend a considerable part of the week-end with Mr Galbally at a location that will not be disclosed.
“This will enable Mr Galbally to make representations on Monday to the minister about Mr Viscreanu’s future.”
The statement said that Mr MacPhee had promised to give immediate attention to those representations. Mr Viscreanu had undertaken in writing to abide by whatever decision Mr MacPhee made then.
