SOLOMON ISLANDS MARINE MAINTENANCE ENGINEER APPLICATIONS are invited for the position of Marine Maintenance Engineer at the Sasape Boatyards at Tulagi in Solomon Islands under the New Zealand Bilateral Aid Programme. The Marine Maintenance Engineer will be responsible to the General Manager of National Fisheries Development. Ltd. a joint venture Solomon Islands/Solomon Taiyo company. The Fisheries Development project is intended to promote skip-jack tuna fishing in Solomon Islands using ten locally constructed ferrocement. fishing vessels. Two at present have been completed and in service and 4 are at various stages of completion. ■ Of the current expatriate staff, two are provided .under New Zealand aid. JOB DESCRIPTION 1. Responsibility for the maintenance of all company machinery and equipment (including generators and diesel aerials), and 2. for the maintenance of all vessels operated by N.F.D. Ltd after commissioning. 3. Establishment of planned maintenance procedures for all equipment and vessels. 4. To advise and assist the N.F.D. stores department to develop and implement a system of stock control for spare parts for all 'equipment and vessels. 5. To assist in the selection of local counterparts and establish an on-the-iob training programme during assignment. The type of engines currently used are Caterpillar. Yanmar, Gardners up to 750 h.p. as propulsion units and auxiliary and generators, but knowledge on the smaller h.p. range including petrol would also be essential. PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE The appointee will be thoroughly experienced in marine maintenance methods and possess a sound standard of electrical knowledge commensurate with sucn experience. Applicants should possess the ability to adapt to a working and living environment very different from that of New Zealand. The appointment will be for two years under terms and conditions applicable to New Zealand Government. Housing will be provided and location and child allowances are also payable.
