Timaru wool prices slip
PA Invercargill Prices were generally down on the Dunedin sale a week ago in the Timaru wool sale held at Invercargill yesterday.
Compared with Dunedin, Merino fleece, fine and extra-fine, was firm; Merino, fleece strong and medium, up to 2.5 per cent cheaper; Halfbred fleece, 2.5 per cent cheaper; Halfbred skirtings, par to 2.5 per cent cheaper; crossbred fleece, in buyers’ favour; crossbred skirtings, 2.5 to 5 per cent cheaper; crossbred second-shear, in buyers’ favour; crossbred oddments, 2.5 to 5 per cent cheaper; and crossbred crutchings, 2.5 per cent cheaper. Main competition came from Western Europe, supported by the Far East, Eastern -Europe, and New Zealand mills. The Wool Board bid on 14.8 per cent Of the catalogue and bought or had passed to it 7 per cent. The 25.875 bales offered
was: Merino fleece. 10.66 per cent; Half bred fleece, 21.40 per cent; crossbred fleece. 14.33 per cent; fine hogget wool, 5.79 per cent; crossbred hogget. 19.63 per cent; oddments, 26.64 per cent; and miscellaneous, 0.66 per cent. The wool was well grown, sound and of good colour and yield, Merino being the feature of the sale. The range of prices was: Extra Fine Merino. 70s and over:
