Lord Brigade appeals in Oamaru feature

By

G. K. YULE

Lord Brigade and Norton, sons of two former top pacers in Lordship and Tactile, will be popular with doubles betters on the first day of the Oamaru Trotting Club’s spring meeting tomorrow.

Lord Brigade was a longshot winner at Addington three starts ago and last time out he made the pace before finishing fifth and being promoted to fourth behind Heather Chief at the end of a solid 2600 m. Lord Brigade has not had much luck in his racing over the last 12 months; otherwise his record would have been vastly improved. In his current splendid form he looks a leading chance in the North Otago Metal Handicap. Amaze, winner of the 1980 New Zealand Derby Stakes, and Sovereign, winner of the same race two years earlier, have rather bleak form backgrounds, but it will not surprise if both take a 'prominent part in the finish. Both horses opposed Heather Chief at Addington ■last week, but had their chances extinguished when they were the victims of interference. With better fortune, they should do better in this field, which is not nearly ac cfrnnP Armbro Wings, Cottonfields, Braem'ar and Verona are others capable of adding interest to the finish.

Norton, one of the speediest three-year-olds in Canterbury did well when sixth at Addington a fortnight back. That was his first start since August and the race should work dramatic improvement in his condition. If he produces a peak run he should win the W. B. McCone Memorial.

Young Beau and Mark to Win will be two of the hardest for him to beat while Scottish Sunset, Vendetta and Salvador will have to be considered.
