Lord Module unimpressive
Lord Module did little to enhance his chances of a start in the New Zealand Cup on November 10 when he performed dismally in the free-for-all at trials held at Motukarara yesterday. Wearing closed winkers with a tinted plastic front, looking similar to a pair of safety glasses, Lord Module stood flat-footed at the start and the leaders had travelled about 17 seconds before Jack Smolensk! could coax the 1979 cup winner into a pace. Once under way, Lord Module did not mount top speed and he was eventually pulled up with about 500 m to run.
The race was won from
end to end by Right Bower, which paced the 2400 m in 3min 12.15, the last 800 m in 59.9 s and the final 400 m in 29.55. He won under a hold by two lengths from Rosewood charger, with a similar distance to Times Up. which shaped attractively, MacDougal and Hands Down were close up next. Hands Down made ground steadily near the end satisfying his trainer, Derek Jones, with his run. Hands down will contest the Hannon Memorial at Oamaru on Monday, to be followed by the Kaikoura Cup a week later and a run at trials as a lead-up to the cup.
