Police chief to stay
PA Wellington The Commissioner of Police (Mr R. J. Walton) has acceded to the Government’s request to remain as head of the police for another two years. The Minister of Police (Mr Couch) said' yesterday that Mr Walton had accepted the Government’s extension to his term of office which would allow him to remain in the job past the mandatory police retirement age of 60.
The vice-president of the Police Officers’ Guild (Inspector Jean Dougall) said last evening, that “disappointed” was too strong a word for the guild’s reaction to Mr Walton’s decision.
“The guild will adhere to its policy for ’no extension. Mr Walton has had the full loyalty and support of officers and will continue to receive it,” she said.
