Moscow upgrades P.L.O.

NZPA-Reuter Moscow The Soviet Union has conferred official diplomatic status on the Moscow office of the Palestine Liberation Organisation. The move appeared to signal a significant new increase in Soviet backing for the P.L.0., possibly in response to the deepening military alliance between the United States and Israel.

Arab sources in Moscow said they thought that the Soviets might also agree in the next few days, during the visit of the P.L.O.’s leader, Yasser Arafat, to supply the organisation with new military support. P.L.O: offices have already been given full diplomatic status in two other Soviet bloc countries, Rumania and Bulgaria, as well as Austria and a string of Third World States. It means they are accredited to governments and receive privileges granted to embassies, although their mission chiefs are not normally called ambassadors.
