Strikers arrested
NZPA-Reuter Salisbury
Police in armoured vehicles arrested about 750 striking nurses and teachers yesterday when breaking up demonstrations in central Salisbury. The demonstrators, who were released shortly afterwards, were detained under emergency regulations reintroduced only last week. They had last, been used under the former white Rhodesian Government.
No charges were pressed but a Home Affairs Ministry’ statement said that “in future no leniency will be shown.”
The police made the arrests during two demonstrations. One was outside the Health Ministry where 500 nurses were detained after a march to demand higher pay and better working conditions, and the other outside the Education Ministry. Yesterday was the first time the Prime Minister (Mr Robert Mugabe) acted against a restive labour since his Government came to power in- April last year.
