‘Mismanagement’ by Waimairi
Council “mismanagement" had led to a counselling service losing its rooms at the Bishopdale Community Centre earlier this month, the Waimairi County Council heard last evening. “It gave them no room to manoeuvre by asking them to move out on October 5,” Cr I. Calvert said. “I believe the council mismanaged this.”
The North Canterbury Hospital' Board counselling service now has new rooms in Papanui Road. Cr Calvert said the service had been helpful to many people. One woman went there only because the rooms were in a community centre. The council asked the centre to move' because the lease had expired and it needed the rooms for its own officers..
Macrocarpa trees ‘ Two macrocarpa trees in Athol Terrace, threatened with the axe because they shadow neighbouring houses, have had a stay of execution.
One of the trees is on the council’s register and councillors on the town-planning committee had disagreed as to whether it should be taken off.
It was decided last evening to consult residents about the matter, and consider it at the next town-planning meeting. Walkways Walkways may be established in rural parts of the county. The council approved the idea in principle, and decided to investigate costs.
Power Municipal Electricity Department profits should be used to lower prices and improve services, according to the council.
It decided to write again to the M.E.D. saying that profits should be spent on improving • the consumers’ lot, rather than on other matters. Earlier the council had written to the M.E.D., saying that it believed that profits were used in an underground wiring replacement programme. New councillor
Mr N. Skevington is the new Belfast riding representative on the council. He was appointed by the council last evening and replaces Mr B. Cossar, who recently resigned.
