‘Plug-pulling’ powers for M.E.D.?

PA Wellington Electrical supply authorities probably will be able to decide for themselves if they wish to exercise powers to pull the plug on noisy parties.

The Minister of Energy (Mr Birch) ’ said yesterday that the proposal in the. Community Noise Control Bill, introduced in Parlianent. on Tuesday evening for recess study, was intended to be used at the discretion of the supply authority involved. The bill proposes that authorities should have the power to disconnect electicity to noisy equipment, if requested. “The possibility of disconnection has been included in the bill only after much serious consideration of the alternatives,” Mr Birch said.

"The use of such a measure would be a matter for the electrical supply authority itself to decide.” The electricity industy would have ample apportunity to make submissions during the recess.

“Noise remains a very real problem, needing a firm and reasonably straighforward solution. In a few cases—where access is impossible for example, or where other remedies are not practiable—disconnection could be the only feasible means of control and I am sure that those in the electrical supply industry wish to co-operate in dealing with this trying problem.” Mr Birch said.
