Zoos get together

NZPA Sydney Animals held in Australian and New Zealand zoos should be treated as a single collection. it has been decided at a conference in the New South Wales town of Dubbo.

Delegates at the thirteenth annual conference of the Australasian Association of Zoo Directors decided to recommend to their boards that the animals be brought under common management for breeding advantages and genetic management. The director of Sydney's Taronga Park Zoo. Nir Jack Throp. hailed the decision as “representing a maturing of thinking and a recognition of total responsibility and commitment to captive wildlife management. "

Mr Throp said some zoos had already adopted the practice of common management.

He said Taronga had sent gorillas to Melbourne, and Perth and Adelaide had sent their black rhinos to Taronga on breeding loans.
