Govt to help boost funds

PA Wellington Financially troubled Air New Zealand may receive an injection of share capital, said the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) yesterday. Mr Muldoon said the Treasury would consider Air New Zealand’s proposals for more Government support. “The airline is asking for it to be in the form of share capital. There is some merit in that because that would restore the capital structure of the airline,” said Mr Muldoon. He said the Government would “stand behind Air New Zealand financially.”

The airline, which had an operating loss of $43 million last year, would be kept going, just as the Government had kept the Shipping Corporation going, said Mr Muldoon. Declining to put a figure on the amount of support sought by the airline, Mr Muldoon was also reticent about disclosing his thoughts on possible Government help. ‘I have got certain ideas of what I think we should do, but I am not going to express them publicly until I have got the comments of Treasury.”
