Mutilated body identified

NZPA Sydney A mutilated body found in a flat in the Sydney suburb of Paddington on Sunday night has been identified as Gerald Lesley Cuthbert, aged 27, formerly of Te Atatau.

Police said Mr Cuthbert was born in Fiji and his parents then migrated to New- Zealand. He came to Australia from Te Atatu five years ago.

A post mortem examination is now being carried out on the body, which was found by two men who lived in the flat when they returned at about 6.15 p.m. on Sunday. Mr Cuthbert’s body was naked and lying face-down with more than 20 stab wounds in the back. His throat was cut.

The police said the dead man had been living at the Sydney Y.M.C.A. but had previously lived in the Stephen Street flat.

They said he was a. regular visitor to the flat and they believed he was killed by someone who accompanied him to the premises.
