Bottles not returned
Christchurch faces a soft drink shortage this summer because people are not returning their empties. The general manager of Coca-Cola Bottlers Canterbury, Ltd, Mr G. .Memsford, said that the problem was worse than in previous years. If more empty bottles were not returned for refilling before the usual summer rush the company would have to freight supplies from Auckland and increase its prices.
“We really do not know where the bottles have gone,” he said. ■ A big advertisement appeared in newspapers on Saturday asking tor bottle returns to dairies, service stations, stores, and exchange depots, but its effect would not be known for a fortnight. A returned soft drink bottle is worth Bc. Mr Memsford said that at present the company had enough bottles to stock its
warehouse but would have to resort to more advertising if people did not start returning their empties.
