N.Z. squash success

NZPA Washington Susan Devoy. of Rotorua, is the only New Zealander to win her way through to the final 16 of the world women's squash championships in Toronto.

Miss Devoy. aged 17. did so with a fine fifth-game recovery yesterday.

In her second round match against the Scottish No. 1 player. Heather Wallace, Miss Devoy. seeded thirteenth of the 64 players in the initial draw, was down 68 in the final game, but came back to win 6-9. 9-4. 9-0. 2-9, 10-8.

She will meet the No. 4 seed. Margaret Zachariah, of Australia, tonight.

Donna Gurran. aged 18. of Edgecumbe. played the match of her life on Sunday before being narrowly defeated bv Miss Zachariah. 79. 6-9. 9-1. 9-2. 9-6. The match lasted 75

minutes, and Miss Gurran turned in a fantastic performance. according to the New Zealand team's manager. Susie Simcock.

Robyn Blackwood. of Auckland, went out in the first round as expected after having the bad luck to draw the No. 1 seed. Vicki Hoffman. of Australia. The score was 9-0. 9-4. 9-0.

Annette Owen, of Auckland. who was seeded sixteenth. disappointed when she lost her first round match against a tenacious Irishwoman. Geraldine Barnable. 8-10, 9-3. 9-2. 6-9, 8-10.

Joanne Milne, of Otago University, won her first game 9-2, 9-2, 9-0. against Sweden's Eva Lunquist, but lost to the No. 5 seed. Angela Smith (England), 0-9. 3-9, 0-9, yesterday. Misses Blackwood. Gurran and Owen all won their plate matches yesterday.
