Orari today; Melbourne next week
By
J. J. BOYLE
Phillip Smith, the Awapuni jockey who will ride Koiro Trelay in the Melbourne Cup a fortnight today, has delayed- his departure to Melbourne until next Monday. Michael Gillies will ride Koiro Trelay in the $200,000 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley next Saturday. Smith will be able to fulfil engagements in the North Island next Saturday, but will team up again with Koiro Trelay in the weight-for-age Mackinnon Stakes on the opening day of the Victoria Racing Club’s Cup carnival on Saturday week. Smith rode at Orari on Saturday and will return
there for today’s Geraldine meeting, where his mounts include King’s Robe and Foam. King’s Robe, a three-year-old son of King’s Palace owned by Mrs Maureen McCarthy, sprinted smoothly in Smith’s hands on the No. 1 grass at Riccarton yesterday. He ran 800 in 49.4, the last 600 in. 36.2. ' Aramis, an expensive failure when Smith’s mount in the McDonald Memorial at Orari on Saturday, will be tested to see if his blood count might have accounted for the disappointing run. He was galloped on in the race, but his trainer Peter Jones does not believe the injury was responsible for
the horse reaching the end of his run about 600 m out. Row of Waves, the young star of the Peter Jones-Chris Mol team this spring, has been withdrawn from sale in the meantime. He was under offer to a New York trainer, but there was a hold-up when one of the intending American partners in the deal dropped out. In the meantime a Sydney owner has opened negotiations for the purchase of the Dunedin Guineas winner, but he has been told that there will be no business done until after the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas or the $lOO,OOO Levin Turf Classic. ,
