Cesarewitch
Joe Mercer produced a polished performance on the 14-to-l chance, Halsbury, to win the Cesarewitch (3600 m at Newmarket, one of English racing’s big autumn handicaps. Halsbury won by a length from Heighlin (Steve Jobar) with the Frenchbred Military Band, the favourite ridden by George Duffield, in third place, half a length behind. It was virtually anybody's race with 500 m left but Mercer threaded his way through the field and the Peter Walwyntrained colt took the lead inside the final 200 m. The race was worth $50,000 to the winning owner.—London.
