Johnston to appeal

NZPA Sydney Malcolm Johnston is almost certain to miss the ride on the champion galloper, Kingston Town, in next Saturday’s $200,000 W. S. Cox Plate (2050 m at Moonee Valley. A.J.C. stewards have suspended the jockey until November 3 — Melbourne Cup day — when he can resume riding. Johnston was charged with careless riding on the favourite, Parados, in the second George Negus Stakes at Randwick on Saturday. Johnston said he would appeal against the 16-day suspension and that he hoped the appeal would be heard before Friday, allowing him to ride in the Cox Plate if it was upheld. Should Johnston fail in his appeal Kingston Town’s trainer, Tummy Smith, is likely to offer the mount to top Victorian jockey, Roy Higgins.
