Pankhurst could win trophy at Orari

By

W. R. CARSTON

Riding winners of major races at Orari has been a, lucrative'exercise for Jim Pankhurst in the last 12. months or so. But the successful Wingatui horseman will not be able to improve his record in the major races at the Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting today unless he picks up a mount by chance. . .

Late yesterday Pankhurst had only two mounts, both in supporting races. But the combined efforts of Quayway and Sea Beau could still earn him a bonus in the form of a saddle valued somewhere around $l5O or $2OO. This saddle ; is the prize which goes to the leading jockey at the club’s three. meetings this season. Pank hurst goes into the last day of that contest with 12 points on the board, the result of a second on Sea Beau and win on Powley on Geraldine Cup day last month and his second on Quayway and win on Sea Princess last Saturday. Pankhurst could still be hard pressed today to take the prize away. “All” Robinson and “Tito” Poblete are breathing down his neck with 10 points each and Jim Collett is also well up in the running with nine points. The tussle for the apprentices’ prize, which is also a' saddle, could also be a pretty close affair. The present leader is Tane Matthews, who begins his riding today with a 16-point tally — two more than Vicki Askew. Charlie Brough, with nine points, is next on the list. Matthews’ employers, Ray and Barbara Harris, are the current leaders in the battle for the trainers’ prize of $2OO. They have 14 points on the board, three more than Pat Corboy. The next three are Tom Lalor, with 10 points, then John Healey and Neil Coulbeck with eight apiece. Even the public will not be left out of today’s prizegiving. Some lucky patron will be $lOO richer after the running of race seven, second leg of the double. ■ All patrons will have to do is write their names on a special tearout page in the racebook, place it in one of the receptacles provided and they will be eligible for the draw.
