Match with Kuwait

Sir.—Coming from an Asian country and having been a soccer referee with Junior Football Association and Sunday league here, I object to the implications in letters that all Asian referees are neither good nor impartial. This attitude is extremely arrogant. Perhaps it was the main cause that brought about the downfall of the New Zealand team in the second half after playing so well in the first spell. Winning is rewarding, but “winning-at-all-costs” is narrow-minded. The damages that have been done to New Zealand soccer, and to the code more generally. by some idiotic elements of the crowd are enormous, and as a soccer fan, I am very saddened. I still remain a supporter of the New Zealand team and wish them much luck on the way to Spain. But we could do without those immature and irresponsible so-called supporters who do not know how to accept refereeing decisions with sportsmanship and dignity.—Yours, etc., H. V. TRAN. October 14. 1981.
