Health foods assurance
PA Wellington The Minister of Health (Mr Gair) gave an assurance last evening that the sale of health foods would not be restricted by the Medicines Bili, passed through its committee stages last evening. The bill is a companion to the Food Bill still before the House and the two together will eventually repeal the Food and Drug Act The Opposition tried to block the legislation because many health food enthusiasts and natural remedy practitioners felt that the bill tampered with their freedoms.
“There is nothing which is legally saleable today by any category of outlet which won’t be legally saleable tomorrow by the same category of outlet,” Mr Gair said. Amendments panel al-
lowed prescription medicines, restricted medicines and pharmacy-only medicines to be sold in hospitals, required the Director-Gen-eral of Health to issue lists of general sale medicines, and permitted the Minister of Health to classify medicines by notice in the Gazette.
