McEnroe casts doubts
NZPA Sydney John McEnroe yesterday cast doubts on the likelihood of his defending the Wimbledon singles crown won this year from Bjorn Borg. When pressed as to whether he would play at next year’s tournament McEnroe said: “Just wait and see if I am there. I will feel a lot better when they (the All England Club) apologise to me — but I might have to wait 50 or 60 years.”
The world No. 1 was fined a total of $2250 during the last Wimbledon championships and later snubbed the post-tournament winners’ ball. He was also refused the membership of the All England Club customarily bestowed on Wimbledon champions.
“I would have gone to the ball,” McEnroe said, "but the only reason it was held in the first place was so that the men’s and women’s winners could dance together. > "Now it is held just to thank the officials — so I didn’t go.”
He also said his fine was the result of tennis politics.
“1 believe the club threatened to pull out of the Volvo Grand Prix circuit unless I was fined — I don’t regret what I did one bit,” he said.
