Family nurses suggested
PA Wellington The concept of family health nurses is one of 25 recommendations in a report on maternal and infant care by the Nurses’ Association. It suggests that family health nurses — general nurses with specialist qualifications — be made responsible for the health of all families in a community. In the long term this would help rationalise the services in both fields, the report says.
The association recognises and respects the right of every woman to choose the birth experience she wants, the report says.
“Wherever a woman chooses to be confined she is entitled to acceptance and practical recognition of her own needs and those of her baby." Alternatives to home birth
such as planned early discharge with back-up support from community midwives, home help assistance, and a napkin service are also suggested. Copies of the report have been sent to nursing schools at technical institutes and universities, the Minister of health (Mr Gair), the Health Department, the Maternity Services Committee, and the Division of Nursing.
