$1.8M bill for refuse disposal

Local councils will be asked to give .$l.B million to the Metropolitan Refuse Disposal Committee during 1982-83. This could mean that the Christchurch City Council, the Kaiapoi and Riccarton borough councils, and the Heathcote, Paparua, and Waimairi county councils could be expected to give $300,000 each. The $l.B million would be spent on capital works, ongoing investigations into refuse, administration, and operating expenses at the Western Transfer Station in Parkhouse Road.

The Kaiapoi mini station and toxic waste facility would also be included in the programme for completion in 1982-83. The original 1977 estimate for the planned refuse disposal scheme was $7.35 million, but according to 1981 money values the estimate is now $10.6 million. The main reason for this increase is an escalation in building and plant costs. y But the committee hopes that the whole scheme will be self-supporting by 1986-87. Income is expected to come from dumping fees.
