Articulated truck hit by train
PA Wellington A 767-tonne express goods train of 19 waggons loaded with containers ploughed into an articulated truck at an Otaki level-crossing at 9.55 a.m. yesterday. The impact drove the cab of the truck 70 metres along the line. The truck driver jumped clear and neither he nor the engine driver were injured. The big truck, from Halcombe. near Marton, had collected a load of crushed dust from the Otaki station's ballast pit for delivery to a local firm, said the Otaki
Ministry of Transport officer, Mr Kevin Wellington. “The drfVer did not see the train coming until it was too late. He tried to reverse off but. when he could not he jumped out." Mr Wellington said. ■ •, He said that the impact drove the cab 70 metres and pushed the rest of the truck off the line. The engine’s cow-catcher had to be cut away before it could be towed by another engine to the station for inspection. It had suffered only minor damage and later continued its run from Auckland to Wellington.
