Eight barges to be unloaded
Farrell Lines' L.A.S.H. (lighter aboard ship) vessel Austral Moon is expected to arrive at Lyttelton on Saturday to discharge eight barges, three of them containing phosphate and the other five loaded with equipment for the United States Navy Antarctic support force in the Antarctic. The barges, when unloaded, will remain at Lyttelton pending the arrival of another Farrell ship from the west coast, of North America. Farrell runs three L.A.S.H. barge carriers to and from the west coast of the United States — the Austral Moon, the Austral Rainbow, and the Austral Lightning — which made a similar delivery to Lyttelton about the same time last year. It is believed that all three ships will soon be sold or leased to the United States Navy which is rapidly expanding its fleet of both merchant vessels for supply purposes and warships formerly in “mothballs.” The Austral Moon was built in 1973 and is the newest of the three ships, the others having been built in 1971 and 1972. She was first named the Philippine Bear and later renamed the Australia Bear before assuming her present name. ARRIVALS Hellespont Courage (5.55 a m.) 22,893. Japan (Guthrey).
