Law and tradition

Sir,—Arthur May (September 19) should perhaps have paid more attention to the Bible than to Christian history during his 40-year wanderings. The solution to a theological problem is found in the words of God, not the actions of men. He would then realise that he cannot ask “the same question” of Jews, Muslims, etc., for the simple reason that these groups do not believe the necessary things. True, the Jews are God’s “chosen people.” This in no way compels Him to choose to give them eternal life regardless'of what they do. They are His chosen people in an altogether different sense. I cannot deny that horrific and brutal crimes have been perpetrated by those claiming Christ's support. I consider that the “establishment" Christendom which did so had likewise little or no understanding of God’s word. But that the Bible is capable of being misunderstood does not require us to reject it, rather than its misinterpretations — Yours, etc., T. C. NICHOLLS. September 22, 1981.
