General’s views offend Cairo

NZPA-Reuter Cairo Egypt said yesterday it had cancelled a visit to Cairo by Israel’s chief of staff because of what it said were offensive remarks about the future of relations between the two countries. But in Tel Aviv, Israeli officials denied that the chief of staff had received an official invitation to visit An Egyptian defence ministry spokesman said the invitation to the Israeli chief of staff, Lieutenant-General, Rafael Eitan, had been withdrawn because he had suggested peace between the two countries depended on President Sadat’s remaining in office. The spokesman said this suggestion was “slanderous

and harmed the peace process." ’ The Israeli daily newspaper, “Maariv,” last Monday quoted General Eitan as saying. “We should not deceive ourselves. Although there is peace with Egypt, it is dangerous. “There are troubles in Egypt, Sadat could go and the whole thing is liable to end. In Egypt, it depends on one man. Here, the wish for peace is evident in the whole people.” The Egyptian spokesman said that the Defence Minister (General Abdel-Halim Ghazala) had asked the Israeli Defence Minister (Mr Ariel Sharon) for an explanation of "these irresponsible remarks."
