Cardinal accused
NZPA-Reuter Chicago The Federal prosecutor's office in Chicago- has acknowledged that it is investigating allegations of misuse of Church funds made against Cardinal John Cody, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Chicago. The acknowledgement was made after a report in the Chicago “Sun-Times” that Cardinal Cody gave as much as a million dollars from tax-exempt Church funds to a lifelong woman friend. A spokesman for Cardinal Cody, who is 73, one of the leading churchmen in the United States, denied any misuse of Church funds. The Federal prosecutor’s office said an- investigation was under way. It had received allegations of improper diversion of Church funds and had to investigate, but they were only allegations, not proven wrongdoings. at this stage. In its copyright story, the “Sun-Times” said the grand jury had issued subpoenas for financial records of the Chicago archdiocese, the cardinal and his friend, Helen Dolan Wilson, aged 74, of St Louis. The newspaper said it learned Cardinal Cody provided over $1 million in 1969 and 1970 for Mrs Wilson to buy a home in Boca Raton, Florida, shortly after she retired from an $9500-a-year position as a manager in St Louis and moved to Chicago.
