Good Lord among cup entries
PA Wellington The. former top New Zealand stayer, Good Lord, and last year's Melbourne Cup winner, Beldale Ball, are among the nominations from the United States for November's, Japan Cup. Good Lord and Beldale Ball are two of 49 nominations from the United States from which four will be selected to compete in the Japan'Cup, run for a stake of about $646,000. Good Lord, now a nine-year-old, in Southern Hemisphere time, would be well remembered for his successive Wellington Cup wins in 1977 and 1978 and three months after the latest of these wins he also captured the Sydney Cup. It was shortly after the latter event that Good Lord went to the United States. Beldale Ball also left for
the United States shortly after winning the Melbourne Cup, in which he beat the New Zealand mare, Blue Denim. Blue Denim is among the eight New Zealand nominations for the Japan Cup. The other seven are Deb’s Mate, Four Crowns, Rev’s Boy, Koiro Trelay, Langeland, Ring The Bell and Shamrock. Nominations from New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the United States all closed at the beginning of this month. The New Zealand Racing Conference received the completed nominations, which total 76, over the week-end from the Japan Racing Association. Besides the four horses to be selected from the United States, there could be two or three horses selected from each of Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
