Tough assignment for ‘The Lady’
Special correspondent Auckland The great mare. Delightful Lady, will be the favourite in the main race at the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting at Alexandra Park this evening. It is unlikely, though, she will be at such cramped odds as usual. She has not raced for just on five months, and has to give some talented horses a start of 25m in the Appeal Furniture Sprint. Delightful Lady is now an eight-year-old and one suspects that she may not be quite as good as she was last season. She. is an idol with Alexandra Park crowds though and for many of them defeat is unthinkable no matter how difficult the assignment. It is in her favour that- she is a brilliant beginner which some of her rivals, John Tudor, Trio and Dictatorship, in particular, are not noted for.
All the same. John Tudor and Trio look Delightful Lady's main threats. Both shaped attractively at the A.T.C. trials last Wednesday, showing they were well forward to resume racing. John Tudor wound up his activities last season, which won him. four-year-old of the year, with a brilliant win off 50m in a 3200 m race with a C 6 front at Alexandra Park in May. Remarkable has shown splendid form this season, gaining a win and two seconds off long marks, in as many starts. The opposition is much stiffer this time but it will be surprising if he does not acquit himself well. Dictatorship also has had three races this season — all at Addington last month. He did not pay a dividend but he had little luck in any of the races and. over all, shaped creditably. Ostrava and Paul Command are others in the field
which will be well backed. Ostrava made a fine come- 1 back last season after being ! off the racing scene for i about 18 months and he looked in pretty good condition when fourth at the trials last Wednesday. Paul Command raced consistently in an Australian campaign following the Inter-Dominion Championships at Hobart in March. Stevie Prestige has shown such outstanding form recently he is bound to be a warm favourite in the Whitford Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. After winning four on end. he tackled a field of pacers at the Manukau Club’s meet-! ing at Alexandra Park last , week and finished a merito-j rious second to the speedy i Lemrac. Off the front mark I this evening it is impossible i to pick anything to beat him. '■ Even New Zealand's top trotter, Scotch Tar, which is j off 65m. faces a daunting I task.
