New Kinsey report
Sir,—While I applaud your printing of the conclusions from the recent Kinsey report on homosexuality (September 9) I am appalled by the ignorance and prejudice inherent in your sub-editorial treatment of the item. First, the article does not “debunk gay ideas.” Quite to the contrary it upholds some of the positive attitudes gay people have expressed about themselves for years. It debunks only establishment ideas based on unsubstantiated and long-perpetuated myth and prejudice. Second, the accompanying drawing is totally un-
necessary, not at all humorous and indeed is downright oppressive. How often must it be pointed out that you misrepresent both homosexuals and transvestites by insinuating that gay men wish to dress up in women’s underwear. The majority of gay people do not have a gender identity problem and to suggest so is scurrilous. With a misleading heading and a distasteful and degrading cartoon you have carelessly handled a valuable and important piece of research.—Yours, etc.. ROY WILSON. September 10, 1981.
