Coal exports increasing
The next export shipment of West Coast coal to Japan from Lyttelton is expected to be larger than usual. Past shipments have averaged about 35,000 tonnes but the next loading, scheduled for loading beginning September 21. will be aboard a larger vessel, the Liberian registered Hellespont Courage, which is expected to take on about 40.000 tonnes.
The Hellespont Courage will be one of the largest bulk carriers to use the Port of Lyttelton with a length of 193.5 metres and a maximum summer fully-loaded draught of 11.71 metres.
She is considerably larger than the previous two vessels used in the West Coast-Lyttelton-Japan coal trade, the Bengal Career and the Sunda Career.
