Skybus given permit
The Aqua Avia Society has been granted a landing permit and its leased Viscount airliner may fly to New Zealand, according to the Secretary for Transport (Mr A. J. Healy) yesterday. The only condition of the permit was that the British Air Ferries aircraft must be transferred to the New Zealand register of aircraft before being used by Aqua Avia, he said. This was a normal condition of landing permission’s being given, Mr Healy said.
A spokesman for Aqua Avia, Mr D. Little, said that the Viscount would leave Britain on September 14 and should arrive at Auckland by September 18. There would be three days of inaugural flights three weeks after the aircraft’s arrival, the first scheduled service one day later. Steps were taken last evening formally to link Aqua Avia with the Piako Aero Club, a prerequisite for Skybus to begin services. The only other hurdle will
be the granting of an air services certificate by the Civil Aviation Division of the Ministry of Transport to approve maintenance systems, crew training, and procedures. The first British Air Ferries staff would arrive at Auckland today, Mr Little said. As soon as they had obtained work permits they would begin recruiting and training more than 150 New Zealanders for the service.
